About Us

My name is Michelle Barrett. Together with my husband John, I own and run KI KENNELS, located on the Hog Bay Road, Kangaroo Island, South Australia. I moved to Kangaroo Island with my family as a teenager in 1984. My husband was born on the island and has lived here his whole life.

KI Kennels was established in 1988 and was owned and run by the same family until March of 2004 when we bought it. We have lived and worked here ever since.

We have always loved animals. Growing up on farms we have always had pets. From the normal sheep dogs and house cats. To the more unusual galah, kangaroos and possums, orphaned lambs and even an emu once. So it seemed like a great idea to combine our love of animals with our business

We wanted to pass on our love of animals to our young children, and by having all different types of animals come to stay with us, our children not only learn the breeds of dogs and cats, but also learn to care for them at a young age. We have our own pets for them to look after, but they love more than anything to give a treat to someone else’s dog, or groom someone else’s cat. Some dogs have spent Christmas day with us on the deck, watching the world go by.

In the past we have boarded cockatiels, turtles, galahs, turkeys and Siamese fighting fish. In all cases the owners have provided all food requirements and detailed instructions because we don’t want to mess it up. On occasions we have arranged, for a small travel fee, to pick up or drop off animals from their own home if the owner is unable to for health or transport difficulties.
